Help us save the rainforestThis is a featured page

One day, I was looking through my science textbook(yes, I was REALLY bored... but it was sorta interesting) when I found a "article" on rainforest destruction. One of the things that stood out was that over 200,000 square km of rainforests are destroyed annually... do some math and you'll see that over 500 sq km of rainforests are destroyed per day(547 actually I think).

If 200,000 sq. km are destroyed per year...
Divide that by 365 days to get 548(rounded) sq. km per day...
Divide by 24 to get 23(rounded) sq. km per HOUR...
Divide once more by 60 to get .4 sq. km per MINUTE!
Now realize that those were 1996 figures.

Almost eleven years had past since those numbers were taken. Think.

200,000 per year...
That means over 2 million sq. km of rainforest had been destroyed since those numbers had been recorded. And this is possibly under the best currumstances. Who's to say those numbers hadn't grown again?
